Check-Ups

Regular dental check-ups are important to maintain a healthy smile. They enable potential problems to be identified early and addressed before they cause discomfort or become major problems.

Cleans

Regular cleans by your dentist help to keep your smile bright and your mouth healthy reducing the development of cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Fissure Sealants

The natural grooves on the biting surface of the molar and premolar teeth are known as fissures. If the grooves are deep or narrow, it can be difficult for toothbrush bristles to clean into these grooves. Plaque can accumulate at the base of these grooves and cause cavities.

In these cases protective coatings called fissure sealants might be recommended to seal the grooves: this can be particularly important for children. Fissure sealants help to prevent the development of decay in the deep grooves of the teeth. Fissure sealants vary from fillings as they do not require tooth surface to be removed.

The tooth surface is cleaned to remove any debris and a flow-able white dental material is placed into the grooves. The material is set using a blue light to form a hard coating, which will prevent plaque accumulating at the base of the groove. It is vital that regularly dental checks are maintained to ensure that the sealants are still present and replaced if they have been lost.

Mouthguards

Mouthguards are protective devices that cover the teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth during sport. Mouthguards are especially important for anyone playing contact sports such as football, rugby and martial arts. However, mouthguards can be provided for any sport to prevent injury or loss of teeth during sporting accidents.

Implants

In many cases a dental implant is the ideal solution to replace missing teeth. Dr Luke Rickman has a Master of Science degree in the replacement of teeth (Prosthodontics, University of Manchester, UK) and was an early adopter of the revolutionary Nobel Clinician Smart Fusion software ensuring optimal treatment outcomes for his patients. Implants can be utilized to replace one or many teeth. When replacing a single tooth, an implant can prevent the removal of neighbouring tooth structure, which is required for a tooth-supported bridge. When multiple teeth are lost, there are a number of options available. Sometimes multiple implants are required for individual tooth replacements. In other cases, a smaller number of implants are placed to support multiple teeth: known as an implant-supported bridge. Such an approach can even be used to replace all of the teeth using the All-On-4 system developed by the implant company Nobel Biocare.

Whitening

The natural colour of teeth varies from person to person and is modified by factors such as smoking, diet, medications, tooth trauma and age. Whitening your teeth can lighten them by a few shades and is a safe and efficient way to enhance your smile immediately.

Tooth whitening is performed by applying specially formulated gels against your teeth. This is often done on the dental chair to provide an almost instant result: gels formulated for use in the dental office are stronger than those formulated for at home use. However, using a correctly selected gel for home use in a custom-made whitening tray also provides excellent results: and is favoured by patients seeking a more independent approach.

Some people have a single discoloured tooth or fillings and crowns on their front teeth. In such cases Dr Rickman may need to use a more specialised approach to achieve an optimal whitening outcome.
